A Bendigo grazier has received a gift valued at £1 10s from a cousin in New Zealand but it cost him an extra £8 19s 5d to get it. The gift was a home-made patented lamb - marking cradle. It weighed 241 b packed. New Zealand freight and handling charge? cost £4 3s 9d. Wharfage, wharf storage, cartage, agency attendance sent the bill soaring. The 1600-miles trip across the Tasman Sea cost £1 Bs, and the transport 100 miles from Melbourne to Bendigo 4s 9d.
