Canoe Discovery
The 18-foot-long bow section of a Maori canoe was ,•
discovered washed up on a beach at Tirohanga. five miles east of Opotiki Obviously very old. it is badly broken up. but is still recognisable as a hollowed-out log. There is no sign of ornamental carving. Maori tradition says other canoes are buried in a swamp in the district, including the largest totara canoe ever built.
