(N.Z. Press Association)
WELLINGTON. June 10
No decision has yet been reached on a scheme put forward by the Minister of Customs (Mr Shelton) for the importation . of sufficient cars to overcome the present shortage. The Prime Minister (Mr Holyoake) said this tonight after the Cabinet had discussed the matter today.
It is believed that the Cabinet is being asked to sanction the issue of extra licences ;o franchise holders on the basis of an extra car under an ordinary import licence for every one sold under the no-remittance scheme. It is believed there also is a prospect that the Cabinet may approve advancing the qualifying date of no-remit-tance funds a year or two beyond the present date of December 31 1958 Another possibility could be a relaxation for the spending of free funds by importers for cars This would mean altering the present qualifying date of on or before February 28 1982 It is understood that the Customs Department believes that the import of an additional 4000 cars costing about £2 million in overseas funds would meet the position
