CARPENTERS’ DISPUTE
“Lock-out Fund” Set Up
Men employed on two construction jobs at the Ilam university site, at a lunchhour meeting yesterday, decided unanimously to contribute £ 1 a week for a “lock-out fund.” to assist men out of work on the St Helens Hospital job. The secretary of the Canterbury Carpenters’ Union, Mr F. L. Langley, yesterday said that the “black” ban imposed by carpenters on the St. Helens job on Friday remained in force.
“No work is going on there at the moment.” he said. “The situation will be discussed at a special meeting of the district council of the Federation of Labour on Thursday night.” The ban on labouring work by tradesmen members of the Canterbury Carpenters’ Union, affects 350 tradesmen and three major construction companies. The tradesmen are seeking an hourly rate of 8s 4d.
Mr Langley yesterday said the average rate being paid carpenters in Christchurch today was 7s 9d. “The rate agreed to by master builders in Auckland, Wellington, and Lower Hutt, is 8s 4d an hour,” he said. “The Christchurch carpenters are asking for the rate operating in those North Island districts.”
