Fish Food Scheme
(N.Z Press Assn.—Copyright) WASHINGTON, June 8
American scientists are attempting to extract a protein concentrate from fish which would supply all the protein needs of an average person for twopence a day, the United States Secretory for the Interior, Mr S. Udall, told the World Food Cong-ess yesterday. The concentrate “shines as a beacon of hope for the 80 per cent, of the world’s population which is today receiving insufficient protein,” Mr Udall said. The French Minister for Scientific Research. Mr Gaston Paleuski, suggested extension and internationalisation of the present United States “food for peace” programme, under which the United States pays the wages of people working on development projects in about a dozen nations, in surplus food. Mr Paleuski suggested that if the present surpluses of the leading Western countries were used as wages, they could put 80 million people to work 125 days a year on simple, vitally important projects such as road building conservation, and digging irrigation ditches
