Shop Sells No Fish—ls It A Fish Shop?
(New Zeaiana Press Asrocuilu-n)
WELLINGTON, June 10.
If a shop sells poultry is it a fish shop? The Arbitra tion Court today reserved its decision on this question The court heard a claim from the inspector of awards who had asked for £75 in penalties against Salisbury Chickens. Ltd The inspector alleged two cases of failure to pay minimum wages, and one of 'failing to keep a time and wages book correctly In all cases the charges related to a small poultry shop run by Salisbury at 68 Dixon Street
The senior inspector ot awards (M: L M Cross! said the two charges relating to wages were breaches of the New Zealand Fish Shop Assistants Award He said the Dixon street shop principally sold poultry but as well sold pre-packed bacon, tinned peas, spaghetti and beans.
When the inspector investigated last year and early this year he found two women
working part-time had been underpaid The Labour Department’s view was that the fish shop assistants' award applied to 'he business as the award defined the industry as the retail fish trade, and any trade selling fresh or cooked fish, various types of fish and shellfish, “and poultry, rabbits, muttonbirds or other perishable goods of like nature '
For the shopkeepers, Mr R E Taylor said it was denied that the business was bound by the fish shop assistants award, as it was not tn any sense in the retail fish trade •
