Wrestling Surprise Defeats Of Internationals

The surprise defeats of two New Zealand representatives at the 1962 Empire Games in •Perth, I. B. Roberts (Canterbury) and W. Nisbet (Wellington). gave added interest to a wrestling contest between a South Island team and Wellington at the North Beach Memorial Hall on Saturday. The South Island team, consisting of wrestlers from Christchurch. and Dunedin, won 11 contests to Wellington's nine. Two bouts were drawn

Nisbet, holder of the national fly-weight title and winner of a bronze medal at Perth, was beaten by a fall by P. Moore (Canterbury), a former New Zealand bantam-weight champion and a member of the Dominion s team at the world championships in Yokohama in 1961.

The national light-weight champion and holder of the most scientific wrestler award. Roberts, was out-pointed by J. Frost, of Wellington. One of the best contests was the drawn middle-weight bout between J Graham (Wellington) and M McNarn (Canterbury). Roman wrestling, was surprisingly held to a draw by Wellington’s R. Butts. The Canterbury fly-weight. R. Kavanagh, a former New Zealand champion, wrestled competently to beat G. Bognuda. of Wellington, on points In the wslter-weight section, the veteran Canterbury competitor. G. Hobson. fought splendidly to out-point N Gordon, Wellington. The events were arranged by the Canterbury Amateur Wrestling District Association.
