DRIVER DIES
Car In River At Kaiapoi A man was drowned when the car he was driving crashed through the railings of the Cam road bridge at Kaiapoi into the Cam river about 7.30 p.m. on Saturday. The accident was not discovered until 9.30 a.m. yesterday. The dead man was
Ronald Robinson, aged 43, a driver, single, of Parsonage road, Woodend.
The car was discovered by Mr Albert White, of Jones street, Kaiapoi. He saw a tyre sticking out of the water and made a closer inspection. The car was lying on its right side and was covered by water at high tide. About 7.30 p.m. on Saturday nearby residents heard a sound which they thought was a truck crossing the bridge. The vehicle was dragged to the bank by a breakdown truck at low tide. The body of Mr Robinson was found in the back seat and the only apparent injury was a cut. Mr Robinson was driving east along Cam road when the accident occurred. There is a slight turn on to the bridge.
