Charlesworth Has Overdue Win

Charlesworth, which had been fourth in his previous four starts, gained an overdue win in the first division of the Hardy Handicap at Nelson, yesterday. He was in the first four early, trailed the pacemaker. Iniquitous, to the half-mile, an dsoon after joined him in front. J Townley asked him for an effort he soqn settled the issue and won easily by three lengths Terri' Lee took second a length in front of Gold Donette, with Major Pip and Beau Rossa next to finish. The three-year-old Alvean recorded a neat performance to win tlie St. Vincent Handicap She got away well and in the middle stages she moved up to Port Hope in the lead. They turned for home together ahead of Chesterfield, Wayren, Del Reno. Vague, Tan Ceti and World Peace, with Royal Harmony making ground four lengths away. Del Reno broke at the furlong and 50 yards later Port Hope broke. This left Alvean clear and she won with something in hand by three lengths from Wayren. which held second by a nose from a determined finisher in Tau Ceti. Syracuse was not tested for second, finishing three lengths in front of Mile End, which had every chance Trudy Helen was a fair fourth, followed by Ajax and Josie Pique. Garralia was handy throughout the second division, W R. Butt waiting until the final furlong before asking him for an effort. He soon took the measure of Terri Lee and he came on to win by a length from Transtar. which made up ground.
