Automatic Picked At Nelson Today

(From Our Own Reporter)

NELSON, June 9. Automatic's second to Trusted in the Nelson Winter Cup yes.erday entitles him to favouritism in the Winter Handicap tomorrow. The Winter Handicap is the first leg of the double on the second day of the Nelson Trotting Club’s winter meeting a; Richmond Park. Automatic overcame a slow start for’ his placing yesterday. If he begins reasonably well he should be too good for most of the horses in this field Rannack Song was one of four horses to graduate to this class on the first day of the meeting. He gained one of the easiest wins of the day and should again handle the conditions more competently than most of his rivals.

Maggie Spangler was an unlucky fourth in the Winter Cup. She did not receive a good run early and lost several lengths in a mix-up outside the three furlongs In the circumstances she did well to finish so close up Willycan. Chief Lynn. Yale. Dieman Lad an! Talent al! raced well yesterday and anyone of them could be capable of taking part in the finish.

Frugal. Jacobite and Mirubuka. all graduates from maiden company yesterday could dispute the finish to the Achilles Handicap, the second leg of the double. This race, over two miles, could find the majority of the field wanting in stamina. On a heavy track Frugal came with a stayer's run for his win yesterday, as also did Jacobite, which was having his first start at a totalisator meeting. Both are strong pacers which impress as hav. ing sufficient stamina to be prominent. Mirubuka has plenty of ability and with a clean start he should be prominent Rangipo. Syracuse. Mile End Stormy Mile and Iniquitous raced reasonably well yester. dav and they should be among the better prospects although their chances of beating the three first-day winners do no* look to -be particularly bright The weather has been fine in Nelson today, with a little drying. Unsettled weather is forecast and even if there is

no further rain the track will again be heavy. Acceptances:— 11 am
