TROTTING Trusted Takes Winter Cup At Nelson

NELSON, June 9.

Trusted added to the outstanding record this season of horses trained at Hinds by W. E. Lowe when he forced most of the pace and gained an easy win in the Nelson Winter Cup on Saturday.

The firm favourite, Automatic, battled on for second ahead of Talent and a very tired remainder, the majority of which found two miles beyond them on a heavy track.

Trusted had been a big disappointment earlier this season but he was still strongly supported and started the 3/4 favourite. He paid £6 Is for a win and £2 Os 6d for a place. His win was too decisive for excuses to be advanced for the others. ,

He set an easy pace in the middle stages of the race but none of the others was capable of taking the lead from him. Automatic looked like putting him to the tes’ inside the furlong, but once Lowe asked him for an effort he soon settled the issue. Automatic’s effort was a sound one, as he lost ground early and was not at his ease in the going. Trusted is raced in partnership by his trainer-driver with the estate of A. A. Lowe. He is a five-year-old gelding

Talent pnd Ray Preston began best from Trusted, which worked to the front at the end of about three furlongs. Trusted set an easy pace through the straight the first time, being trailed by Talent, with Ray Preston, Thrift. Maud Noble. Borodin, Maggie Spangler, Light Away. Automatic, Dieman Lad, and Yale following in fairly close order.

Yale was the first to move, being followed through near the seven furlongs by Dieman Lad. The last-named joined Trusted in front near the five furlongs, but Trusted had shaken him off racing to the straight. Dieman Lad was still second at this stage with Talent, Yale. Automatic. Thrift. Ray Preston. Maggie Spangler, and Borodin showing up.

Automatic drew up to Trusted just inside the furlong, but Trusted drew’ out again and won well by a length and a half, Automatic finishing two lengths in front of Talent. Maggie Spangler did w’ell to finish fourth, clear of Ray Preston, Dieman Lad. Borodin, and Yale. Set Pace Honest Pick broke at the start of the Collingwood Handicap. Spring Lass checked Marcus Aurelius and Vague lost a few lengths. Wayren and O'Sullivan set the pace, being closely attended .with nine furlongs left by Del Reno, which was on the inside of Port Hope, and World Peace. Vague, Chesterfield Spring Lass, and Marcus Aurelius were all close up. Wayren shook off O'Sullivan before the half-mile and he led to the straight ahead of Del Reno, with Chesterfield, which broke and checked Vague, handy, ahead of Port Hope, World Peace, and Marcus Aurelius. Wayren was soon in trouble, and Port Hope challenged through the inside, then Del Reno challenged further out. Del Reno almost broke with about 30 yards to run, but she caught her gait again and got up in the last stride to beat Port Hope by half a length. Marcus Aurelius made up ground for third three lengths away, ahead of Vague. Wayren. Spring Lass, and World Peace. which were well beaten. Only Win

Pancho Boy gave F. E. Newfield his sole win for the day when he outsped the sprinters in the Ajax Handicap. Wee Lord stood on the mark, while Yale, Bold John, and Magic Scott lost ground. Ray Preston went away in the lead, being followed closely by Pancho Boy. Didman Lad improved to be on the outside of Ray Preston approaching the straight, with Pancho Boy still trailing ahead of Borodin, Bold John. Talent, and Yale. Ray Preston was soon beaten and Dieman Lad was joined by Pancho Boy. The last-named quickly took control and drew right away to win easily by five lengths Dieman Lad fought on for second, three lengths in front of a solid finisher in Yale, which befit - Talent by a nose Borodin was a fair fifth, ahead of Ray Preston, with a gap to Goldpeen. Bold John, and Magic Scott.
