GOLF Unbeaten Templeton Is Woodward Cup Winner

In bleak and bitterly cold conditions at the Rangiora golf course yesterday, Templeton, with another fine performance in the final round, won the Woodward Cup for the 1963 season. I empleton did not lose a match—it surprisingly halved with Avondale in the third round—and held a.half-point lead over Russley A which it had beaten in the first series. Both the leaders had comfortable wins yesterday.

With many playing the new Rangiora layout of twelve holes for the first time, and considering the difficult and unpleasant conditions, it was not surprising that there was little golf of real note to bring the inter-club season to a close. Once the first few holes had been completed in the match between Templeton and Christchurch A, ft seemed that several major upsets would be needed to deprive Templeton of top honours. Most of its players astabI shed early leads, and several were untroubled to win. It was another sound team eflfort, emphasising to the full, Templeton's fine all-round competence. Christchurch A was unlucky to be without C. W. Caldwell, and in his absence the strong Templeton pair, R. E Clements and A. C. Browne, were never seriously challenged by A. W. Robms >n and D. F. Williamson. Browne played the best golf of the day against Williamson to win 7 and 5. and although Williamson's long game was d s:ressiogly bad, he would have needed to be at his very best to have even held Browne, who was in fine form, particularly over the first half.

For this nine Browne was three under scratch, with six bogeys and a run of three successive birdies from the short fifth to the long seventh, a*, which stage he was five up. His long game was functioning well, and his short game often superb, with one-putt greens commonplace.

Against such competence and with his own tee and iron shots straying everywhere, there was little Williamson could do. but he tried hard to compensate on the greens. Two very long and badly needed putts at the sixth and seventh just stayed out, and it seemed only justice when he chipped into the cup with .flag in place at the next and then sank a fine putt for a half to reduce the deficit to four.

But Browne soon put the issue beyond doubt, and Williamson summed up his troubles off the tees by driving over the fence at the thirteenth, and promptly conceded the hole and match. Clements, although rather a strange mixture of good and indifferent, was untroubled by

Robinson who after making a partial recovery to be two down at the eighth, proceeded to fail with little putts on several greens when trying dest>era tely to stay in the game.

C. H. Johnston, in fourth position, was again quite deadly around the greens to win 7 and 6, and N. Mabey, L. Boyd, and I. McKillop also had good wins for Templeton, for whom only D. Murdock, who found J. G. Scott at near-best, was beaten.

For Russley A, R. C. Murray hit many fine drives, and

sank several very good putts to beat B. L. Clegg, whose recovery after a bad start kept the match alive for some time, without being enough to contain his opponent But K. D. Foxton provided the big surprise of the round by losing to J. P. Devine. Foxton never hit the ball well, he could obtain little of his usual length from the tees, and many loose irons were followed by putting far below his usual standards. Results were:— Templeton 64, Christchurch A 14 R. E. Clements beat A. W. Robinson, 5 and 4: A. C. Browne beat D. F. Williamson, 7 and 5; D. Murdock lost to J. G. Scott, 5 and 4; C. L. Johnson beat L.
