SUGAR PRICE IN N.Z.
High Level To Remain (N Z Press Association > AUCKLAND. June 9. The retail price of sugar, now lid a lb, will not fall till overseas prices drop considerably, a spokesman for the New Zealand Sugar Company said *in Auckland. Overseas prices will have to drop by £2O to £3O a ton before retail prices change. The spokesman said that there was no indication of when the price would go down. V "But there is no indication of an increase in price,” he added. The New Zealand retail price was increased from 8d to 9d on March 25 and was increased to lOd on May 6 and lid on May 27. World Trend This year the New Zealand wholesale price has risen from £6l 15s to £B9 10s a ton following a world-wide trend. The secretary of the New Zealand Sugar Company (Mr F. G. Eilingiham) said that a report quoting a company spokesman on sugar prices was incorrect. Mr Ellingham said that no company spokesman had made a statement. It was not the policy of the company to make announcements on sugar prices except when there was an actual rise or fall in price, he said.
