SIR WILLIAM WALTON
Visit To N.Z. Next Year
Sir William Walton would visit New Zealand early next year to conduct the National Orchestra in seven concerts of his own w’orks, said the Deputy Director-General of the New Zealand Broadcasting Corporation, Mr L. R Sceats, yesterday. “I am very pleased to be able to announce a successful conclusion to our negotiations to bring Sir William Walton to’ New Zealand.” said Mr Sceats. "To have so eminent a composer in our midst will be both a verygreat honour and a stimulus to the orchestra."
. Concerts will be given in Auckland on February 22. Wellington on February 26 and 29. Dunedin cn March 2. Christchurch on March 5 and 7, and Wellington on March 9. The works which Sir William Walton will conduct include his First and Second Symphonies, Variations on a Theme by Hindemith, "Henry V Suite.” “Facade,” Partita for Orchestra, his violin or cello concertos, his arrangement of “The Wise Virgins,” and the Portsmouth, Scapino and Jilnannesburg overtures. It is hoped that the concerts in Christchurch on March 7 and Wellington on March 9 will iea.iure “Belshazzars Feast” with combined Christchurch choirs. Sir William Walton, who lives on the island of Ischia, in the Bay of Naples, will be accompanied by Lady Walton. He had expressed his wish for a leisurely tour, Mr Sceats said, in order to see as much as possible of New Zealand and its people.
