The Plaza Theatre in Cathedral square will close in November. The owners of the property. Square Freeholds. Li, have accepted a vacat on notice from Kerndge Cdeon. the present occupiers. I s understood that the lease v as terminated because of the cecUne in cinema attendances a.- a result of television. The Plaza, which is the •mallest cinema in the centre of the city, was called the Strand in the days of silent pictures. It took its name
from the lane beside the building between the Square and Hereford street. The theatre was named the Plaza in the eany 1930 s after talking pictures were introduced Before Kerr id ge Odeon took over the lease it was held by the J C. Williamson Picture Corporation which also used to operate the Avon Theatre. The present lease will expire on November 21. The owners of the building intend to lease it on a long-term basis.
