ENGINEERING BALL
Cartoons illustrating engineering terms decorated the Winter Garden last evening for the annual ball of the Engineering Society of the School of Engineering The ball was held in conjunction with the Canterbury branch of the New Zealand Institution of Engineers. The black and white cartoons were sketched by Miss K Webley, an art student. The chairman of the society (Mr J F. Webley) and Mrs Webley, and the institution's president (Mr P L. Laing) and Mrs Laing welcomed the guests More than 400 people attended the ball.
Invited guests included the Minister of Transport (Mr McAlpine), the Mayor of Christchurch (Mr G Manning) and Mrs Manning, the chairman of the Canterbury branch of the New Zealand Institution of Engineers (Professor H. Hopkins) and Mrs Hopkins, the president of the Law Students’ Society (Mr J. Fox), the president of the Student Accountants' Society (Mr J Rundle), the president of the Students' Association (Mr N. Thomson), the Dean of the School of Engineering (Professor R. J. Rastrick) and Mrs Rastrick, the professor of electrical engineering at the School of Engineering (Professor N. M McElweei and Mrs McElwee the Registrar of the University (Mr G G Turbott) and Mrs Turboett), and the bursar at the School of Engineering (Mr W Thomson) and Mrs Thomson)
Mrs Webley wore a gown of deep cream frosted satin with a strapless bodice, highlighted. at the waist-line by a draped belt The skirt was bell-shaped, with concentrated fullness at the back The matching stole was lined with lame Mrs Laing chose a fulllength. black velvet gown with a wide neckline and cap sleeves With her dress she wore a matching s'ole lined with dusky pink taffeta
