TOUGH RACE FOR SNELL
Top-Class U.S. Competition (N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) COMPTON (California), June 7. The New Zealand world record-holder, P. G. Snell, was in top condition today for the Compton invitation mile race tonight (0.55 G.M.T.). Associated Press reported. Snell will face three of the runners he defeated at the Modesto meeting a fortnight ago—J. Beatty, rated the best American miler, J. Grelle and G. Weistger. the U.S. marine who finished second'to Snell. D. Burleson will also be in the field. He. was runnerup to Snell at Iz>s Angeles in Snell’s first appearance of the year in the United States, both men finishing outside the four-minute mark. A hint that Snell might be tiring m his United States campaign came with his decision not to enter the Amateur Athletic Union championships. which start in S'.. Louis. Missouri, on June 21. United Press International reported. Snell said he refused an invitation to run in St. Louis because “I don’t want to wear myself out.”
