LIBERTY OF INDIVIDUAL
Constitutional Society’s Role
"The Press" Special Service ROTORUA, June 7.
If ever there was a time when a society such as the Constitutional Society was needed in New Zealand it was surely now, said the chairman of the society (Mr J. B. Donald), speaking at the opening of the society s convention at Rotorua todav “On every hand we see people and companies more and more looking to the Government-of-the-day for assistance, instead of going ahead in their own strength and their own ability." he said. “The result is that the Public Service is being built up and gaining more power month by month." This was not good for the Dominion or its people, Mr Donald said. It tended to create a nation of weaklings, and destroy the liberties of the individual, when just the opposite was required. "Never was there a time, not only in this Dominion but throughout the world, when the great slogan should be remembered: 'Eternal vigilance is the price of liberty.' It is unfortunate so many are satisfied with the good things of today and are thus lured to forget the unfortunate consequences of the future."
