REPRINTS AND NEW EDITIONS

Rosamond Fane. By M. and C. Lee. Oxford-Univer-sity Press. 195 pp.

This historical novel, first published in 1870, retains its appeal today although further research has thrown more light on at least two of its characters The story deals with the life of Rosamond, a cavalier lass, living very happily with her Puritan uncle and his family who were by no means extreme. She retains her royalist leanings and when the family moves to St James's Palace she quickly befriends the Princess Elizabeth, and James. Duke of York. Her cousin Maurice, is not at all attracted by the moody prince but even he. so close to Rosamond, did not realise that she had become an intriguer and was using him and her other cousins as a blind while aiding the Prince James in his escape. At the Restoration, the former children meet to rrourn the loss of the gentle and timid Princess Elizabeth This is a pleasant and sensible book which still manages to be exciting.
