CYCLONE VICTIMS
N.Z. Red Cross Asked For Aid
An appeal from the League of Red Cross Societies; in Geneva, for assistance with the relief programme for people in the southern coastal area of East Pakistan, which was devastated by a severe cyclone recently, has been received by the New Zealand Red Cross Society. The society has made an initial grant of £3OO from its disaster relief fund. The Dominion executive of the society will meet shortly to consider further assistance of a long-term nature. The cable received by the society from Geneva says that all local resources in the disaster area are being pooled to ensure a united front to check the spread of waterborne diseases and epidemics The following requests are made* in order of priority: cash donations, blankets, cotton material for saris and lungies. sulpha drugs, multi vitamins, paludrine and quinine, D.DT., bleaching powder, water purification tablets, and milk powder and other foodstuffs. The cable says that it is believed there are about 300.000 persons suffering as a result of the cyclone.
