TROOPS IN TEHERAN
Martial Law After Riots (N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) TEHERAN, June 6 Truck loads of troops armed with machine-guns today patrolled Teheran after martial law had been declared and a curfew clamped on the capital following a day of rioting, Reuter reported.
New shooting and fighting erupted outside the Government radio station in Teheran today, the Associated Press reported. One bloodstreaked ambulance was seen entering the capital's only public cemetery. Troop® with machineguns guarded the entrance and mourners were kept away at bayonet point. The Military Governor of Teheran, General Nassiri. said today official reports showed that 26 people were killed—l 4 in Teheran and 12 in the holy city of Kum—and about 60 injured in yesterday’s riots, British United Press reported.
The situation was now under control, he said. Earlier the Government denied over Teheran Radio a report that there were 1000 casualties in yesterday's riots, saying such a figure was “false, exaggerated and surprising."
The arrest of Roulhollah Khomeini, a Moslem leader, and 20 of his followers, was reported to have sparked off yesterday’s riots, Reuter reported. Last night the Government declared martial law in the city and the military governor imposed a 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. curfew.
Teheran is calm but tense this morning and most shops in the northern part of the capital opened on time. The wreckage of cars and debris from buildings set on fire and looted by demonstrators yesterday are being cleared from the streets.
