173 Named As Tax Offenders— 53 Farmers

WELLINGTON, June 6. Today’s Gazette contains the names of 173 persons who have been penalised for tax offences. Fifty-three are described as farmers. Thirty-five persons were convicted under Section 228
(B) of the Land and Income Tax Act. 1954, of wilfully making false returns of income or giving false information.
The highest amount (or estimated amount) evaded in this class was £6175, going back to 1952; the penal tax imposed was £3OOO.
Another 117 persons were charged penaj tax under Section 231 of the act for evading or attempting to evade payments of income tax or defaulting in a duty imposed by the act. Some of the defalcations went back to 1952. One offender is recorded as having evaded payment of £15,995 and the penalty imposed was a further £15,000. A person who evaded payment of £5l was charged another £25 penal tax. Twenty-one persons were charged with penal tax under Section 34 of the Income Tax Assessment Act, 1957, for failure to make tax deductions from source deduction payments or, having made such deductions, for failure to account for them. The greatest amount involved in this class was £604 and the penalty imposed was .£lOO The smallest amount was £l4 for which £lO penalty was imposed.
