Transport Board

Sir.—lf people are wise they will! decidedly vote against the Transport Board’s being handed over to private enterprise. I have had experience of private enterprise running city transport and have waited for long periods for a bus. Private enterprise just does not run unless it can see a profit and consequently the number of trips is heavily reduced. It would be fairly simple to make the service pay by a fleet reduction and eliminating unpayable trips but there would be a severe over-all reduction in public service. The problem of unpayable public transport services is worad-wide and private enterprise can solve it only as described above by retrenchment of staff working conditions. I venture the- .opinion that no-one wishes to see that.— Yours, etc., E.C. June 3, 1963.
