West Coast Farming
Sir,—Saturday’* Farm and Station article dealing with farm development on the West Coast, I fear, could prove misleading to anyone not well acquainted with Westland. I will deal only with Waipuna Station being more familiar with its early history’ This holding hag an area in excess of 3500 acres <not 2360 as mentioned) 90 per cent, of which has never been covered with logs, gorse, or fern, thereby allowing stack to browse unrestricted for over 100 years—hence a certain degree of natural fertility has been present for a long time Excellent crops of oats, turnips and potatoes were growing long before the speaker was born. The 19 bales of wool given as the wool clip for 1946 would sound too ridiculous for further comment. More harm than good will be done for "Westland's future" if facta and figures are allowed to mislead the reader—Yours, etc. LET’S BE HONEST. May 27. 1963
