SAWMILL CLOSES
Eight Men Jobless (N.Z. Press Association) REEFTON, May 31. Eight married men have been added to the unemployment list in the Reefton district after the closing of the Cronadun sawmill yesterday afternoon. Lack of finance and lack of co-operation were described by the mill manager, Mr C. H. Chandler, as the reasons for the sawmills closure. When working at its peak the Cronadun sawmill employed about 50 men and had an annual output of 2J million super feet of Rimu and the best-quality native timbers. In more recent times the mill employed about eight men and had an annual production of about 225,000 super feet. Eighteen married men were already on the unemployed list because of heating in the Radiant and North-east Co-operative Party mines and difficulties being experienced by the South-east Co-opera-tive mine in the Garvey’s Creek coalfield.
Representations are being made to the Under-secretary for Mines (Mr P. M. Outhwaite) in an endeavour to open up new coal seams in the hope of securing employment for the men concerned.
