Gadgets

It was an occasion for gadgets at the field day held by the Foothills branch of Federated Farmers at Staveley this week. Much interest was shown in a novel metal cradle used for holding a calf about to be castrated. The cradle consists of a metal pen mounted inside hoops at either end. Once the calf is in the pen, the pen is rolled over so that the animal is on its back. A small gate in the near side of the pen gives access to the animal. This gadget is the idea of a local farmer, Mr J, J Richardson. Mr G. D. Rountree, of Alford Forest, showed an attachment which is dragged behind a baler to carry about' 12 bales of hay. These can be dropped unstacked in a line across the paddock by releasing a panel at the rear. The advantage, Mr Rountree explained, was that the carrier would pick up the bales for Id a bale cheaper than he would for single bales scattered about the paddock, major themes of the dairy section of the conference.
