15 Perish In Wreck
(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter —Copyright) PAPEETE, May 29. An injured nurse drifted in the for nine hours before being picked up by motor canoes after the motor cutter Manuia sank near Maupiti Island last week. In the wreck, in the Leeward Archipelago, nine persons were drowned and sixall women and children—were presumed lost. • It was one of the costliest in human life for several years in Polynesia. The cutter, with 47 passengers who had attended the opening of a Mormon Chapel on Huahine Island, was struck broadside on by a large wave as’ it entered narrows leading to Maupit: Island lagoon last Thursday. It capsized and rolled over several times before running aground, keel uppermost. Passengers were carried out towards the open sea. Six got a foothold on a reef, but three were swept out by waves. Others used the broken deck of the cutter as a raft. Authorities sent immediate help and the injured were taken to Uturoa, on the island of Raiatea.
