FLUORIDE LACK
‘lnfringement Of Rights’
“New Zealanders have very poor teeth, but I don’t really see why they should expect to keep any teeth at all, when they eat large quantities of sugar and go without fluoride in their water,” Professor J. Mayer, of the Harvard University School of Public Health, said in Christchurch yesterday. “Lack of fluoride is far more detrimental than too much sugar.” said Professor Mayer. Failure to fluoridate public water supplies was an infringement of human rights, he said. “Everyone has the right to make a fool of himself as long as he doesn’t infringe the rights of others.” the professor said. “After all, the children have rights—the right to good teeth. It is the children’s rights which are being infringed by the anti-fluorida-tion-ists. The right of children to their teeth is at least as great as the right of the ‘antis’ to tell fairy-tales.
“All of us. as citizens, are responsible for the children, and we should be conscious of their rights and protect them.”
