Head Appointed
Mr P. L. Chignell, who became Director of Christian Education for the Anglican diocese of Christchurch in September last year, has been appointed headmaster of Middleton Grange School. He is married, with six children Mr Chignell was educated at St. John’s School, Leatherhead, where at 17 years of age he became one of the first school-boy pilots holding an A licence. He went to Durham University in 1939 where his studies were interrupted by the war He joined the Royal Air Force in 1940 and was trained in Canada as a pilot. On his return to England he was posted to Transport Command, and continued flying until 1945.
In 1947 Mr Chignell was demobilised after spending two years in hospital as a result of injuries sustained while flying. In 1947 he entered Queen's College,
Cambridge and took a bachelor’s degree in arts in 1949, and then spent a further :wo years on a post-graduate course, and graduated M.A in 1951. In the same year he was appointed assistant master at Taversham Hall, Norwich, and in the following year accepted an appointment teaching religious knowledge and mathematics at Spalding Grammar School. In 1954 Mr Chignell was appointed headmaster of Christchurch School, a junior co-educa-tional foundation in London, and remained in this post for four years and a half. In September. 1958. he was appointed a lecturer at the North Riding Training College, and a year later he accepted an overseas post
with the Royal Air Force and became headmaster of a large co-educational secondary school in Singapore. He came to Christchurch las’ year
