Cholmondeley Home

Security, it is now recognised, is a basic requirement of children. If, because of broken homes or accidents, illness, or the death of parents, children are bereft of security, our society, which is based on a happy family life, is the loser. Much can be done by close relatives and friends to mitigate the suffering of children, but it is not always possible to find acceptable foster parents readily. The Cholmondeley Memorial Children’s Home at Governor’s Bay has for 63 years provided an emergency home for children in these circumstances. Last year the home cared for 203 children, who were at the home for an average of 30 days each. The principal objective of the organisers now is to reduce the lower

age limit it has been forced to set from three years to one year, so that family groups can be cared for together—an important step in their emotional rehabilitation and happiness. This advance, as might be expected, will require additional expenditure; and a street appeal is to be held today to help find the money for it, as well as for the normal running of the home. The administrators also hope to attract regular subscribers and sponsors as knowledge of the work of the home spreads. A generous community’s heart is always stirred when children in misfortune are brought to jts notice; and the appeal merits the generous response Christchurch citizens give to worthy and humanitarian causes.
