Molybdenum - Based Grease
SEVERAL car manufacturers now specify longer periods between lubrications for their vehicles if a molybdenum-based grease is used. Some specify 1000-mile intervals with ordinary multipurpose grease or 5000 miles with molybdenum - based grease.
This grease was available in New Zealand, an oil cotn-
pany official told “The Press” recently. However, molyb-denum-based grease was more expensive than ordinary grease, and over-all cost worked out very much the same.
The official said that the extended lubrication period recommendations were definitely suitable.for British conditions, where most roads
were sealed and reasonably free from grit. However, the extended periods might not be- as suitable for New Zealand conditions, as in this country cars tended to suffer more from abrasive particles picked up off road surfaces. After a joint had been lubricated the grease tended to, work out as the joint moved. The grease would pick up grit and abrasives and then be worked back into the joint. This would also carry the grit into tire joint, where it could do damage and accelerate wear.
Because of this he . thought that in New Zealand conditions regular greasing at 1000 miles was probably better than extended periods with special grease. Greasing a joint forced out the old abra-sive-carrying grease, water and any other harmful substance.
Nevertheless for those who wanted it the special molyb-denum-based grease was available at many garages.
