WEEK-END DEATHS
Warning From > Minister <N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON. May 30. Week-end deaths were the scourge of roads at any time the Minis'er of Transport (Mr McAlpine) said today, commenting upon the motoring hazards of Queen’s Birthday week-end “Long week-ends are always a great worry to traffic i authorities charged with pre- ' venting road accidents." he said. Mr McAlpine said six persons died and 221 were injured—many of them seriously—in road accidents last Queen's Birthday week-end. Saturday and Monday accounted for more than two-thirds of this toll. He said there were 25 serious smashes between 4 p.m. and 10 pm. on both Saturday and Monday A large \ proport ion of these occurred : in the two hours immediately : after hotel drinking ceased iat 6 pm. ■ “This time of year is never ; noted for its ideal driving | conditions and motorists tnusl ; moderate their speeds and driving behaviour, particu- ' larly at night or in the wet. ' to avoid a repetition of previous year’s high accident rates,” ne said.
