TROTTING Chance For No Trumps To Make Amends Today

No Trumps, a member of G. McKendry’s successful Methven team, looks favourably placed on the limit to win the Stewards’ Handicap on the first day of the Ashburton Trotting ’ Club’s winter meeting today.

; No Trumps failed to return a dividend for only the second time in 11 starts this season when she finished sixth in the twomile Peninsula Handicap at Addington last Saturday. She forced most of the pace, but was given no respite in the middle stages. Not surprisingly, she tired a shade. No Trumps will appreciate the half-mile shorter distance in today’s race and in spite of the rise in the class of the opposition, she should be hard to head. Minnow trotted a splendid race for second in the main race at Addington last week and t was only inside the furlong that Flaming Way took her measure.

Minnow is right back to her peak and if she receives a reasonable run. her handicap of 36 yards should not keep her out of the finish.

Queen’s Cord and Kerry Cord will form a strong bracket for their Kaikoura trainer. J. H. Docherty. Queen’s Cord broke at Addington when rushing for the lead just after the start She showed great speed to finish seventh and was far from disgraced. If she trots smoothly, and she usually does, she should take part in the finish. Kerry Cord is a fit horse, but would be preferred over a longer distance. The consistent Grand Charge, a fair third in All Bey’s race at Addington last week, should do best of the remainder on the front Even so, he should be held fairly safely by some of the betterperformed horses further back in the handicaps. The horses on 12 yards and 24 yards will have to improve on their recent racing to have much chance with some capable trotters on 36 yards. Anak has shown splendid form at Ashburton in the past and he is capable of winning. He looks very well and might have been unlucky not to have been given a start at Addington last W’eek. Astralight was a rather disappointing ninth at Oamaru recently. He is very well and could surprise. Oakleigh Lad and Hindu have both shown speed in their recent races and they must be regarded as sound place prospects. The double will be run on the Durbar Handicap and the Harvest Handicap. Parados, Procella. and Loyal Brigade form a likely trio for the first leg. while Solemn. Spring Garrison, and Belroy might do best in an open field for the second leg. Fine weather is forecast. The track will be in splendid order after several days of good drying weather. 11 a-m.—
