American Came On His Honeymoon And Stayed

AUCKLAND, May 30.
A United States citizen, Stanley Jerome Applebaum, land agent, was charged in the Auckland Magistrate’s Court this afternoon with remaining in New Zealand after the period of bis temporary permit had expired. Applebaum was alternatively charged with entering New Zealand on October 29. 1958. without obtaining an entry permit. He pleaded not guilty to the charges. The hearing, before Mr F. McCarthy, S.M., will continue tomorrow.
Mr C. M. Nicholson, for the Labour Department, said Applebaum and his wife, who is French, arrived in New Zealand on October 29, 1958. on their honeymoon and as tourists. Mrs Applebaum had a temporary permit to remain in New Zealand for six months. Less than two months after their arrival they applied to settle permanently in New Zealand. They were advised that their application was declined, said Mr Nicholson, and were requested to leave the country. They stated
| that they were making | arrangements to leave but ; they did not leave the i country. Mr Nicholson said I the couple had continued to make requests to stay in New I Zealand. The Applebaums were granted a 12-month temporary permit to stay in New Zealand in 1960 and a further 12-month permit in 1931. Their requests to stay in the country permanently were consistently declined. In March, 1962, Applebaum’s permit was extended for one month but no further extension had been granted since that date, said Mr Nicholson. Formal proof of Mr Nicholson’s statements was given by Athol Wilfred Smith, a Customs Department officer.
