STATE AID TO SCHOOLS
Warning Against
Reliance
It would be a national disaster if the individuality of private schools was destroyed, said Mr C. C. A. McLachlan. the chairman, of the Canterbury-Westland division of the National Party yesterday, when warning against complete reliance on the State by private schools. State aid to private schools was raised first by the Roman Catholic Church but was now occupying the thinking of many other denominations, he said. Moral obligations of religion made the problem more difficult for some than for others. Mr McLachlan said it was difficult to define where the State began and ended once State aid was given. The correct approach would seem to be along the lines of concessions to those who supported private schools.
