CAR HELD BY TREE

Man Dragged , To Safety

While a break-down truck prevented his wrecked car from crashing to the bottom of a 30-f.xst guily a gerniconacious 21-year-old farmer was dragged to safety by police a few miles south of New Plymouth this afternoon.

The injured man » lan Wallace Wickham, of Junction road. New Plymouth. He was taken by ambukirx-e to hospital where his condition was described tonight as satisfactory. His injuries were not serious police said. The car was resting on tree branches half-way down the gully, and before he could be pulled from tihe badlysmashed car it had to be secured by a winch to Mop it falling further, Mr Wickham was pulled through the space where the windscreen had been. In the impact the entire shield was forced from its fixture. The accident occurred just south of New Plymouth on the New Plytnouth-Hiawera

highway when the small late-model car failed to necntiate a comer, rolled over, hit a power pole and careered over a bank, coming to rest about 15ft down acaln&t tree branches.

The car was lying upsidedown with its roof smashed almost to the level of its seat tops. ,
