Botanic Bother
(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) LONDON, May 27. A mysterious fungus is attacking the Royal 'Navy’s most modern warships and scientists are baffled over its origin, the “Daily Express” reports. “It’s like something from outer space,” one scientist commented. Chemists at a Royal Navy laboratory in Dorset are giving the fungus priority treatment, thg newspaper says. They consider the growth could disrupt the precision electronic gear in the latest “push-button’’ ships. Scientists have at least two theories to account for the origin of the growth. One is that fungus spores blown aboard ships circulate in the ventilation system and invade remote compartments. Heat built up by the glowing valves of electronic equipment encourages them to “breed.” The other theory is that chemical reactions between newly-developed materials—many of them classified—could produce the fungus.
