How To Beat D.B. Clarke!
(New Zealand Press Association)
WESTPORT, May 28. Some Rugby teams are noted for the way they play open football, others for their ruggedness, but not many could match two Waikato clubs tor their shrewdness in endeavouring to beat D. B. Clarke’s team. The All Black full-back said in Westport tonight that his side had played one particular team two or three tames in one season and
always on a fine day. He could never understand bow the ball the other side produced was always waterlogged and heavy. Inquiries were made ’and the secret came to light. The opposition had been soaking the ball in water tor the whole night prior to the maftch. Another club also had a favourite trick. The ball which it produced for play was always half flat
Even the 1950 Lions were not without a little shrewdness, and demanded that the ball be pumped as hard as possible. In this way it would float Clarke said these “little tricks" had made him study the rules and he now always insisted on inspecting the bail to be used in the match. With the correct pressure it should be possible to depress the ends of the bail slightly with the thumb.
