TOURISTS LOSE 20-5

I, Macßae Scores Three Tries For Hawke ’s Bay

(Neu* Zealand Press Association;

NAPIER, May 28.

A dazzling burst of three tries in eight minutes, the almost complete domination by Hawke’s Bay and the brilliant individual performance of 20-year-old I. R. Macßae were the highlights of Hawke’s Bay win by 20 points (four tries, two penalties and a conversion) to 5 (a converted try) at Napier today. The scoring spree came in the second half. K. R. Tremain crossed for Hawke’s Bay after 14 minutes; the No. 8, B. J. Wightman, replied after 16 minutes and then Macßae scored the second of his three tries two minutes later.

Hawke’s Bay was always in command and its young back-line, with solid tackling and good penetration, gave the Englishmen few opportunities. The tourists looked dangerous on occasions but they could not make much ground against a stonewall defence.

In the Hawke’s Bay back-line only one player was over 21— the half-back, B. R. Neale, who is 25. The youngest was B. D. Furlong, aged 18. The English backs did not settle down and were again plagued by mishandling and faulty passing. Time and time again they could have made ground, but because of a dropped pass, lost the chance. Had England been able to handle their passes the result might have been different.

Star of the tourists’ backline was C. G. Gibson, who impressed with his subtlety and his all-round good work. He made several good breaks and had he been supported England could have scored more points. Hosen Out of Form The full-back, R. W. Hosen, who has been regarded as the find of the Englishmen’s tour, was out of form. He was unsuccessful with four penalty attempts and his only points came from a conversion of Wightman’s try. But he continually saved England with long touch finders. Of the other backs in the touring side, F. D. Sykes, on the wing, made a few good runs and was a sound defender. The fly-half, R. F. Read, made one particularly good break, but suffered from the mishandling of others. The England forwards were overwhelmed by the lighter Hawke’s Bay eight, but A. M. Davis and V. R. Marriott, lock and flanker, were impressive. The hooker, J. D. Thorne, playing his first game in New Zealand, won the scrums, 1815. with four indecisive. The Hawke’s Bay pack was

more consolidated, and although England won more ball in the scrums, the home side was best in the lineouts. Tremain Outstanding The flanker, Tremain, who -plays his third game against England on Saturday at Christchurch, was probably the most dangerous Hawke’s Bay forward, and he was always in the thick of play. He had good support from the front row of N. W. Thimbleby, C. Craik, and G. W. Love. Backing up well was the No. 8, T. W. Johnson, and R. Hiha, while R. S. Abel

was a force in line-cuts. There were several stoppages for injuries, and the final whistle was blown about eight minutes over time. None of the injuries were serious, however. f A crowd of 17,000 attended the game, played in fine, sunny weather on a hard McLean Park. The teams were:— England: R. W. Hosen, F. D. Sykes, M. P. Weston (captain), C. G. Gibson, J. M. Dee, R. F. Read, T. C. Wintie, B. J. Wightman, D. P. Rogers, D. G. Berry, A. M. Davis. V. R. Marriott, P. E. Judd, J. D. Thorne, J. E. Highton. Hawke’s Bay: I. R. Bishop, W. L. Davis, I. R. Macrae, G. Kivell, A. M. Loughlan, B. D. Furlong, B. R. Neale, T. W. Johnson (captain), K. R. Tremain, R. H. Hiha, R. S. Abel, G. A. Stone, N. W. Thimbleby, C. Craik, G. W. Love. The referee was Mr C. J. McAuley, of Otago.
