Indoor Basketball Y.M.C.A. IN LEAD

Positions Not Changed

Positions remained unchanged following the seventh round of matches in the Canterbury Men's Basketball Association's A grade competition, played in the Cowles Memorial Stadium last evening. All teams have now played each other once and Y.M.C.A., with a total of 12 points, is the only unbeaten side.

Points are: Y.M.CA. 12. University A 10, Rex 8, Y-Boys 8. University B 2, Wigram 2, Burnham 2.

The three matches played last evening reached a reasonably high standard but there was little excitement, Y.M.C.A., Rex and University B all winning by substantial margins. The closest match of the night was between Rex and Wigram. Although Rex finally won, 3221, Wigram showed considerable fire in the first half to lead 15-12 at half-time. At one stage, after about lOmin of play. Wigram. one of the bottom three teems in the competition, had a surprising 14-4 lead. However, It could not stand the pace and after half-time slumped extremely badly. Rex scored 18 points in a row without having a basket made against it. The former Canterbury B representative, J. McEvoy, scored 12 points to top score in the match.

The clash between last season's competition winner, Y.M.C.A., and last season's runner-up, Y-Boys, proved a bright match but the result was never in doubt. At half-time Y.M.C.A. led by 30 points to 13 and came out final winners by 49 points to 30. In the last A grade match of the evening, University A gained an overwhelming win against University B, 60-22. The match was little more than a practice for the A team, which could probably have even widened the margin if it had really put on the pressure. W. Ward-Holmes (University A), in scoring 20 points, now holds the individual points record for the season. W. Smith also had a field day, scoring 14 points. Leading player for the B team was P. Sharp, who scored 12.

Lower grade results were:— Senior Reserve.—Orients 38, Jaycees 19; YM.C.A. B 41, Teachers’ College 37; Stars 36. Police 24; Lincoln College beat University by default; LJJjS. 28. Rangiora 28.

Under 20.—Christchurch Boys' High School 31. Y.M.C.A. E 23; High School Old Boys 21. St. Andrew’s College 18.
