GREY LYNN VOTE

Few Attend Meetings

(N.Z. Press Association)

AUCKLAND, May 18. The seventh by-election to be held during this Parliament will be held on Saturday in the Grey Lynn electorate. There are four candidates for this seat.

The Government has called on four Ministers to travel to Auckland to support the National Party candidate Mr R. J. Presland. The Labour Party has assigned four local members of Parliament and the Deputy-Leader of the Opposition, Mr Watt, to assist its candidate, Mr R J. Keeling. Both party leaders, the Prime Minister (Mr Holyoake) and the Leader of the Opposition (Mr Nordmeyer) wound up the 10-day campaign with meeting tonight. Little public interest has been shown at the eight meetings addressed by National and Labour 'candidates. Attendances do not exceed 290 and most meetings have been over within 90 minutes after only one or two questions have been asked by the audience.

Two of the candidates at the by-election, Mr W A Ross (Social Credit) and Mr G. E. Jackson (Communist Party) have not held public meetings.

In the 1960 General Election, Grey Lynn returned the late Mr F. Hackett with a majority of 4596. The 13.736 voters represented 89 per cent, of the electoral roll.
