Waste Of Food

Sir, —I was very impressed with Professor L. R. Richardson's statement about the appalling waste in New Zealand in the slaughter of rabbits, goats and deer, good food which could be used for home consumption and tor export. It is a national disgrace that fish is so dear when our waters teem with it that we are denied the opportunity of enjoying tasty rabbits, which, like fish, are nutritious and would provide a welcome change in our diet. Rabbit was always one of my favourite meat foods, and I felt very disgusted when it was no longer possible to buy it in the Christchurch shops. We are constantly being told that we should stop up our economy and widen our markets, yet we deliberately turn down a chance to do so, and I consider it is high time that our laws were altered to permit rabbit skins to be exported and valuable foods to be sent to the countries that will purchase them. —Yours, etc., E. MASLEN. May 13, 1963.
