MEAT SALES TO JAPAN

“Interested In Mutton”

(IV.Z. Press Association)

WELLINGTON, May 13. The Japanese were definitely interested in New Zealand mutton, Mr D. S. Johnson, a lecturer in Japanese at Victoria University, claimed tonight. He was commenting on a statement made in Auckland by Sir Leslie Munro, former New Zealand Ambassador to the United States, that the marketing of old ewes, which the Japanese did not like, might be harmful to creating a taste for lamb.

The reason the Japanese bought ewe mutton, said Mr Johnson, was its cheapness. Beef sold for 10s a lb there, chicken and pork for Bs, horse for 6s and ewe for 4s.

He admitted that the ewe mutton did smell, but said the Meat Board was doing a good job of disguising this. Much of the meat was either processed into sausages or corned.
