SAILORS SET WALK TIME
50-Mile Effort At Auckland (N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, May 12. Two sailors from the Fishery Protection Squadron staggered on today to beat the 50-mile walking record from Maramarua to Auckland. The former record of lOhr 27min was recently set by two Auckland University students, Donald Rise and Graham Jackson. Nine men, all in the crews of the H.M.N.Z.S. Manga and H.M.N.Z.S. Mako, left Bridge at 9.40 p.m. on Saturday. The two record-beaters, Petty Officer M. Ranga of the Manga and Radio Operator T. East of the Mako arrived at Princes street. Auckland (where the students stopped) lOhrs 12min later. They reached the Chief Post Office in lOhrs 23min The route was the same as that taken by the students. Only five men completed the journey. Two stopped after 34 miles and two gave up at Newmarket.
The leaders almost did not make it. During one of his periodic checks on the competitors the van driver, Petty Officer G. Cooper, discovered East and Aranga fast asleep in a Green Lane bus shelter Apparently they had sat down for a “breather.”
