AIR FARE DISPUTE

Averted Crisis (N.Z.P.A.-Reuter —Copyright) WASHINGTON, May 12. Britain and the United States averted a crisis in the trans-Atlantic air fare war yesterday with a promise to hold more talks this week. ' American officials said Britain had given assurances it would take no action in the mean time to bar cheaperfare United States airlines from British airports. They said, however, the two Governments still disagreed on the air fares problem. The United States is opposed to a planned 5 per cent. Atlantic fare increase, but Britain supports the rise. The new fares, increasing the New York-London roundtrip jet economy rate by 27 dollars, were originally agreed by the major world airlines to go into effect at midnight last night, but were vetoed by the United States Civil Aeronautics Board. The dispute threatened to disrupt airline services between the United States and Britain.
