Pit Stops
The Volkswagen Owners’ Club inter-club event, the Wolfsburg rally, drew a good entry of 31 cars from clubs in the area. The Rallies and Trials Enthusiasts’ Club entered two teams of three cars and took first and second place in the team results. The teams comprised M. A. White-Johnson (Citroen), N. J. Mahoney (VW) and E. B. S. Grey (Velox) in first place, and J Sunderland (VW). K. L. J. Bush (Consul) and A. J. Petre (Zodiac) in second. A Canterbury Car Club team comprising W. Cheesman (VW), C. G. Finney (Jaguar) and A. Dorn was third. ¥ ¥ ¥
An afternoon rally held by the M.G. Car Club recently was won by B. Sharp (Austin Healey) from B. Nicholl (Mini) and R. Stephenson (MG TF). Fourth place went to C. Collins (Holden) and fifth to R. Evans (TR3A). The 60-mUe route passed through the Kaiapoi, Rangiora and Ashley districts. There were 16 checks and controls.
First five places in the 110-mile Wolfsburg night rally, inter-club event, were: E. B. S. Grey (RATEC) 1; C. G. Finney (Canty) 2, M. Lomax (VW) 3, G. J. Owen (MG) 4, and A. Dorn (Canty.) 5. Roads were fair and average speeds were reasonable, making for a most enjoyable event Four cars retired early in the event when they became completely lost.
A rally run by the Canterbury Car Club last Saturday evening was won by R. F. Evans-D. B. Nicholl (Mini) with P. Archer-R. H. McCallum (Holden) second, R. A. Tayloc-I. M. Super (A4o> thjrd. J. D. Butts-W. Clapham (Rover) fourth and D. J. Good-D. Barnard (Oxford) fifth. * * M The Canterbury Car Clubs T. V. Myers trial was won by W. Chees-man-R. Moore (VW), with L. Hayes-B. Hayes (Ford V 8) second; J. Butts-W. Clapham (Rover) third; G. Kingston-G. Alexander (Vanguard) fourth and R. Evans-B. Nicholl (TR3) fifth. The event was organised by H. G. Sheppard and W. M. Bremner * ¥ ¥ The Ashburton Car Club held its annual economy run recently The 141-mile course passed through Rakaia, Leeston, Springston. and Tai Tapu to Motukarara, Gebbie's Pass, Corsair Bay, Lyttelton. Sumner. Christchurch, and back to Ashburton. The provisional results quoted were worked on a percentage formula derived from other economy runs. The first five placings were: U Cromie (Chevrolet), 27.13 m.p.g.; G. Buchanan (Rambler), 28.22; F. Rickard (Rover 105), 31.71. P. Royds (Renault Frigate), 30.67. and E. Cameron (Jaguar Mk. 7). 23.31. * A Ford Falcon entered by the American company has won the famous 2000mile Tulip rally from a Morris Mini-Cooper and a Volvo. Pat Moss (Cortina) won the Coupe des Dames.
