LEPTOSPIROSIS IN DEER

Infections Cause Concern A significant infection of red deer by leptospirosis had been observed by the protection forest branch of the New Zealand Forest Service, the officer in charge of the branch (Mr J. T. Holloway) told an erosion conference at the branch headquarters in Rangiora yesterday. In Europe and North America, infection of deer herds by such diseases as leptospirosis and brucellosis, which were communicable to domestic animals and human beings, was a cause of concern, and for this reason a corresponding investigation was being made here, Mr Holloway said. The project was still underway. A considerable range of parasites had been found to be common to deer and domestic animals in New Zealand, Mr. Holloway said, and one or two of these parasites were a major economic importance. The work had been started by a member of his staff who had undertaken parasite studies as a university thesis, and promised to become a most important research field for the branch.
