PROMOTING TRADE
Import-Export Houses Urged
The establishment of New Zealand import-export houses is urged by Mr A. R. Simm. manager of Townsend and Paul, Ltd., Wellington fruit and produce merchants and wholesale fish merchants in a background paper prepared for the export promotion conference next month. Mr Simm describes the contribution to Britain's overseas exchange earnings made by her import-export houses. He says such houses have become established elsewhere and have grown in strength because of the volume of “free” trade available to them.
“They have stimulated trade. They can make a deal where no-one else could, they can detect an opportunity where no-one else would, and herein lies their great attraction.
‘‘Their opportunity in New Zealand is at the moment strictly limited, but to the extent that the ‘free’ sector of our export trade expands, the trading house will grow into it and will play its part. “There are incentives which Government can offer to trade which will hasten the day of the export house while filling a dual role There is a job awaiting trade organisations in the education of the commercial community and in the collection collation and dissemination of the functions and uses of export houses.”
