Port Strike At Sydney
(N.Z. Press Assn—Copyright) • SYDNEY, May 8. A sudden strike by waterside workers operating mechanical equipment, threw the Sydney waterfront into confusion late today. Just after 1 p.m., 250 members of the mechanical branch of the Waterside Workers’ Federation walked off the job. The strikers handle fork lifts and mobile cranes, and the port was left without mechanical equipment. The Stevedoring Industry Authority ordered 1000 watersiders to handle the cargo manually but they refused and were dismissed for the day. The stoppage and the dismissals left insufficient labour to handle the 52 ships in port.
