STAFF FOR RANGING

Acclimatisation Society Need

Either the society would have to cut down on the nutaber of projects it was undertaking or it would have to make an addition to its staff, said Mr D. E. Ames at the monthly meeting of the North Canterbury Acclimatisation Society council. Mr Ames was giving notice ot motion that he wished to rescind the council’s former decision not to increase the ranging staff at present and to move that an additional man be appointed. It was obvious that a project officer would have to be appointed, said Mr W. H. Robinson. There was work on thte books that either did not get very far or else was not done at all. “The situation needs tidying up,” he said. If there were a staff of 12 instead of thrge and a curator, the situation would still be the same, said Dr. D. McK. Dickson, who opposed the motion. He said the priority aims of the society were salvaging fish and pheasants and ranging pregame shooting and swans nesting. Sometimes there was not enough work for three, said Mr G. Mugford. His solution was to hire good casual labour at peak times and pay the staff good wages to put up with any inconveniences such as long hours. Mr F. J. Gorton, the president, said that the work had grown tremendously on the game side. There was one man full-time on partridges, who needed outside labour to help with cages. In addition men were engaged on collecting salmon ova and were on call to remove birds which were a nuisance to farmers in the area. He was in favour of an additional man, he said.

Banker Dies.— The London manager of the Australia and New Zealand Bank died on Sunday, "The Times” reports. He was Mr William Joseph Parr, aged 55, who had been ill for only a short time. Mr Parr, who was born in London, had toured Australia and New Zealand extensively.—(London, May 8.)
